When I was reading Crystal Paine’s The Money Saving Mom’s Budget book over the weekend, she talked about using her bread machine to create special treats for her family like cinnamon rolls instead of making bread. She buys the sandwich bread at an outlet. Her philosophy is to make the most of her limited time, and spending time making special treats is a more frugal use of her time than making bread. I have to say that philosophy resonates with me though I do love the feel and smells of making fresh bread.

To make these rolls, I used a previously posted dinner roll recipe which has eggs and butter in it. This combination makes for a somewhat sweet, soft dinner roll, and makes a good base for other treats like cinnamon rolls.

Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

dinner roll recipe for bread machine using white whole wheat flour and organic sugar

1/4 cup sucanat (just under)
1/4 cup organic sugar (just under)
1 T cinnamon
1 T melted butter

Method

cinnamon_rolls_1

Dough rolled out on floured board and sprinkled with cinnamon mixture

Roll out dough on flour board into a rectangle shape.

Brush melted butter onto dough.

Sprinkle dough with cinnamon sugar mixture.

Roll up dough into long log shape.

cinnamon_rolls_2

Dough rolled into log and sliced with pastry cutter

Cut up log into small pieces about 1 1/2″ wide. I cut mine in half, and then halved the halves, and repeated the step again to give myself 8 rolls.

Place rolls into greased square 8″ pan and let rise for 25 minutes.

Bake at 350 for 18 to 20 minutes.

I really need to get a bread machine. My husband offered to get me one for Christmas, but I said no, because I wasn’t sure I would use it. But I love the idea of using it for other things, like cinnamon rolls. They look delicious.

I just saw one at our local Goodwill for $20. My current one came from my sister. It was a wedding gift that she never used. I would ask around and see if anyone wants to get rid of one.

Growing up my parents owned a restaurant and bakery. So I have a soft spot for cinnamon rolls and homemade donuts. These look delicious.

I am sooo glad to have this recipe and the link to the dinner rolls. I just finished a loaf of garlic/herb bread in my bread machine. I don’t have many recipes for my machine, as I bought it at a garage sale and had no original book with it. So, anytime I find a new bread machine recipe I get excited! I cannot wait to make both these recipes and blow my husband away at how good my $15 garage sale find really was a great deal! Thanks for the recipe and linking to TMTT.

Thanks! Have you tried searching on sites like allrecipes.com or just doing a simple Google search for bread machine recipes?

I have a recipe for pizza dough, too which I should post.
