how does your garden grow? september 6, 2011

Come here on Tuesdays to read about my vegetable garden project and share yours.

My Garden

Red Cabbage

Red Cabbage

I just rediscovered the red cabbage in my flower beds. I planted 3 plants in the spring, and did nothing with them all summer. They look a little too mature, but I’m determined not to waste them. I’ve decided to pick one tomorrow and serve it as a side dish at dinner. I’m debating whether to start some sauerkraut. I have the crock, however, I did not have a good experience the first time I made sauerkraut.

The dahlias are blooming right now! I love seeing their bright colors tucked into the flower beds. If I remember to dig them up before the last frost in November, we’ll be able to enjoy them again next year!

Pie Pumpkin

Pie Pumpkin

My 2 pie pumpkins growing in a flower bed are doing great! This one is almost ready to be picked, but the other one needs more time. However, pumpkins will ripen off the vine if left in the sun.

Dahlias and pumpkins–fall is right around the corner, isn’t it? And maybe coleslaw with the cabbage, or some type of soup that uses cabbage??

Ooh, coleslaw – I didn’t think of that! My sil’s mom made coleslaw with vinegar; I should ask her for the recipe.

Dahlias certainly are the Queens of September. Love their many colors and forms.

What a beautiful phrase! I haven’t grown dahlias in awhile, and didn’t realize this was their month. I’ll certainly have to dig them up this fall, and put them in a better place next year.

Planting vegetables in the flower bed, what a great idea.

OOH! Pumpkins!
Unfortunately, we waited too late to plant any this year. I think your dahlias’ color is my new favorite color.

Isn’t it a great color? Fall colors are my favorite, then the bright pinks and yellows of summer.
