I’ve include the map of our flower and vegetable gardens to orient you on the left side of our urban homestead, i.e. our suburban yard. Here’s Part 1.
Looking at our main vegetable garden, you will also see part of our clothesline.
Hiding in this bed functioning as annual plants are a cherry tomato, cabbage, parsley, pepper, and sunflowers. I also have a permanent planting of a cherry bush, blueberry bushes, and grapevines. There are 2 grapevines next to the house, close to the back porch. Growing next to the back porch is our oldest grapevine – concord grapes.
This is our main vegetable garden from May. The tomato plants are much, much bigger now.
At the end of the main vegetable garden next to the driveway we have a small bed of blackberry and raspberry vines, both of which take up little space. In the back is our porch where you’ll find the concord grapevine, clematis, and a peach-colored climbing rose, all of which shade the porch in the summer.
Thanks for coming on the tour! Don’t forget to check out other urban homesteaders at Take Back Urban Homesteading’s Video and Photo Tour Action Day.

Wow! I’m guess you never hit the produce department of the grocery store? Your yard is amazing. We’re trying our luck with a veggie garden for the first time this year and so far so good. We’re growing peas, tomatoes, cucumbers and eggplants. Since everything in our garden is doing so well, we’re thinking of expanding next year. You are truly inspirational to a newbie like me.
Thanks! We still go to a local produce place weekly, though we don’t need as much as we used to. I love gardening, and I love that every year is a little different. Different challenges, and still tweaking what we need to grow.
I absolutely love how you’ve incorporated food plants all over your landscape- good for you!
Thanks for sharing this!
